Mahaplag News – 150 meter flood control project being built to protect Mahaplag

MAHAPLAG NEWS – The provincial government of Leyte is constructing a 150 meter flood protection structure along the Poblacion, south east of this municipality. The project aims to keep the river from further scouring this side of the municipality which hangs by about three meters against the snaking Layog River.

Mayor Daisy Abuyabor Lleve told Visayan Business Post that the local government of Mahaplag is thankful that the Provincial government have allocated at least P9.4 Million for the project. “The flood control project is expected to be completed by December”, said mayor Lleve.

Lleve disclosed that the irregular and wide flowing Layog River rises to threaten several homes of the Tinago area of the poblacion during rainy or stormy seasons. “The old flood protection structure in the site have developed precarious cracks and it may no longer hold against incessant and strong currents brought by potential heavy rains”, said mayor Llleve.

Flooding is one of several natural threats facing Mahaplag which is bounded by a river that flows from the mountainous terrain of this landlocked municipality. The flood protection project is part of numerous disaster risk reduction programs of the provincial government.
