NORTHERN SAMAR NEWS – While Armed Forces of the Philippines chief-of-staff General Gregorio Catapang shed tears for 44 PNP-SAF troopers recently killed in Maguindanao, another battle this time erupting between government troops and NPA rebels in Northern Samar has left one soldier dead.
Army’s 34th Infantry Battalion engaged a group of rebels in Barangay Imelda, a hinterland area of Las Navas in Northern Samar early on February 3.
Information received by the Visayan Business Post from the Philippine Army’s 8th Infantry Division revealed that elements of the army’s 34th Infantry Battalion were informed about the presence of New People’s Army rebels in Las Navas prompting it to conduct a security operation in the area.
The report said troops trying to verify the information in Barangay Imelda were ambushed by the rebels leaving a soldier fatally wounded. Two NPA rebels were apprehended by the troopers as they tried to flee from the fight after being left behind by their comrades, the report added.
“The slain soldier died a hero’s death and his sacrifice and bravery will not be forgotten”, said 8ID Commanding general Jet B. Velarmino.
The two unidentified rebels are now in the custody of the Philippine Army, where they await proper legal processes.
