Pastrana News – At least 300 farmers belonging to various farmers and irrigators associations have come together to hold their first general congress in this municipality.
Led by the humanitarian aid organization ONEVisayas, the farmer’s conference focused on agriculture reform initiatives together with the Department of Agriculture, Congressman Henry Ong (2nd District, Leyte), the Local Government of Pastrana, the National Irrigation Administration, and Philippine Coconut Authority.
‘Nagpapasalamat gud kami nga ginhimo ini yana nga aktibidad ipinaagi han ONEVisayas kay nagkaada kami hin higayon nga igkaestorya directa an mga mayores han aton gobyerno ngan kan congressman Henry Ong parte han amon mga problema ha pag-uma’, said Teresita Costimiano.
Coming from remote Barangay Aringit in Pastrana, Teresita was joined in by delegates from 25 other agriculture barangays in Pastrana.
Department of Agriculture 8 Regional Executive Director Wilson Cerbito told congress participants that it would help a lot if farmers will try to understand the current economic direction and programs being implemented by the new government.
‘Kinahanglan gihapon kamo aktibo nga gumi-os ngan iyo seguraduhon nga an mga hinabang han gobyerno in iyo makakarawat ipinaagi han iyo gihapon partisipasyon’, he said.
Director Cerbito, who came in with boxes of certified seeds and other agriculture inputs, thanked ONEVisayas for organizing the conference saying non–government humanitarian aid organizations like ONEVisayas play an indispensable role in government’s rural development efforts.
‘Kapag nagkakaisa po tayo ay mayroon tayong patutunguhan, mayroong makikinig, at mas magiging madali ang ating pagbangon sa kahirapan tungo sa kaunlaran’, 2nd District Congressman Henry Ong said as he asked farmers to help themselves.
‘Kami po sa gobyerno ay mas makakatulong ng maayos kung tutulungan din po ninyo ang inyong sarili’, Ong added.
Newly elected mayor Dr. Alvin Opiniano of Pastrana was seen taking notes during the congress. He said that he is presently following up on various agriculture programs and available funding from the Department of Agriculture.
The farmer’s congress was a joint undertaking by ONEVisayas, the Local Government of Pastrana, Congressman Henry Ong, Department of Agriculture, Philippine Coconut Authority, and National Irrigation Administration.
The program was also supported by leading online media organization Visayan Business Post and Bombo Radyo Philippines as media partners.
