PASTRANA LEYTE – Only eighteen student leaders from various parts of Leyte successfully hurdled the ONE Discovery intensive leadership training seminar that was recently concluded in this town.
The three days, two nights, live–in training involved organization management and psycho-emotional exercises intended for students to discover their individual inner leadership and decision–making potentials.
Conducted by the humanitarian aid organization Opportunities for a New Economy in the Visayas, Inc. or ONEVisayas, leadership coaches from the Ateneo de Manila University, the University of the Philippines and international guest coaches, helped facilitate diverse training modules and workshops for the students.
‘Our mission was to discover the leaders residing within the various individuals who participated in the seminar’, Coach Beth Bevan, whose vast experience in human resource development and training administration has involved working for multi-national employers, told the Visayan Business Post.
‘Mostly coming from financially challenged backgrounds, the student leaders underwent demanding tasks and problems designed to test their ability to solve adult problems’, ONEVisayas IT Director and coach Andy Bevan disclosed.
ONEVisayas founder and executive director Frank Villablanca encouraged graduates that they were ‘making history as no seminar of the type you went through was being given to 15-year old students in the country’. ‘The idea is for you to meritoriously respond to issues around the fundamental dynamics upsetting personal and group discipline’, he said.
Lead training facilitator and professional life coach Dennis Heruela from Ateneo de Manila told VBP that he was pleasantly surprised at how the student leaders were able to immediately understand and adapt as a team to some delicate tasks most adults find hard to solve. Heruela is the co-founder of Stratworks, one of the country’s leading media consultancy firms.
Pastrana Leyte municipal mayor Alvin Opiniano, MD, congratulated the ONE Discovery Team for the successful training run which was held at the Juan Villablanca Memorial High School with the help of officials from the Department of Education.
UP Professor and local governance expert Ladylyn Lim Mangada congratulated ONEVisayas for inspiring young people about what she described as ‘leadership by essence and action’.
