ORMOC NEWS – Residents and officials of this thriving coastal city ecstatically celebrated the city’s 67th founding anniversary with the 5th Tugob Festival.

“Tugob” which means abundance in the Visayan language is a festival featuring the city’s rich resources in steam, water, pineapple, sugarcane, cassava, fish, livestock, coconut, vegetables, rice, and sand and gravel. These resources have been identified as economic factors that have helped in the progress and development of the city.

Eleven schools of the city including defending champion Ormoc City National High School showed early winning form in the street dancing and main festival competitions following a thunderous merriment that started with a grand parade in the streets of Ormoc.

The festivities allowed local and foreign tourists to witness an overnight street party featuring Ormoc’s characteristic fruit, barbecue, native food and beverage stands.

Ormoc became a city after the famous Leyte Landings in World War 2 following the passage of Republic Act No. 179 on 21 June 1947. It was formally inaugurated as a city on October 20, 1947 by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 42.
