The Yolanda Heroism Awards were held at the Ritz Tower de Leyte, Tacloban City on November 5th. DILG-8 Regional Director Pedro A. Noval Jr. said that the awards “seek to recognize people who risked their lives in the service of the community during the brunt of super typhoon Yolanda and to glorify exemplars of the virtues of courage, selflessness, gallantry, and bravery worthy of emulation.”

Recognized for their Acts of Valor were Dionesio Bagon, a security guard and resident of Palo, Leyte; Christopher Caspe from Magallanes, Tacloban City; Armando Corillo from V&G Subdivision, Tacloban City; Benjoe Mercenes of Taguiktic San Jose, Tacloban City; and Isagani Sabalza of Brgy, Magay, Tanauan, Leyte.

Honored for Acts of Good Samaritan were Nilda Quiero of the Philippine Red Cross, Chief Inspector Adel Bautista of the Bureau of Fire Protection, and Ranel Repasa from Tanauan, Leyte.

Nominations were validated by DILG and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Health (DOH), Department of Education (DepEd), and the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) Eastern Visayas Chapter.

The award recipients were all nominated by the people they had rescued or by those who had witnessed their acts of heroism. Parish priests and government officials from the local area then endorsed the nominations.

Dir. Noval and other Agency representatives introduced the honorees, and presented the awards, along with UNDP Yolanda Response Team Project Manager Eden P. Garde, who gave the Inspirational Message. The presentations also featured short videos of each of the honorees.
