Ormoc News – Seaside residents troop to evacuation centres in Ormoc, need food

ORMOC NEWS – The rains have started to come and stronger winds has been blowing steadily by the hour as the effects of typhoon Ruby begin to be felt in this coastal city.

Although no longer considered a super typhoon and is predicted to make a landfall somewhere over the east or northern Samar area, evacuees are now pouring into the various designated evacuation centres in this city.

Almost 400 families from 11 barangays mostly from coastal areas in Ormoc have complied with the mandatory evacuation of seaside residents and are now occupying the Ormoc City Night High School. Most of the evacuees brought only their clothes and some drinking water but lack food. They are now awaiting government’s assistance.

“We have water and sanitary facilities including spaces where we can sleep in, but we cannot cook food in this evacuation centre”, said Nicafel, a mother of three children aged 3 and 2 years old. She also has a three month old baby.

Representatives from the city social welfare office are reportedly still gathering information on the evacuees and assessing what recent assistance should be given.

The city government have established an incident command centre at the city hall where local government authorities and emergency response teams are monitoring the city’s disaster preparation and management efforts. Responders have earlier been pre-positioned in the city’s high risk areas.

Typhoon “RUBY” has been located at 180 km East Northeast of Borongan, Eastern Samar based on PAGASA’s latest weather bulletin. Slightly weakening, it still packs maximum sustained winds of up to 195 kph and a gustiness of up to 230 kph, moving West at 13 kph.
