Baybay News – LTFRB Region 8 crackdown on illegal operators

BAYBAY NEWS – A combined team of inspectors and lawyers from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) of the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) made a surprise inspection of the documents and state of several public utility vehicles here.

The 8-member inspectorate team headed by Attorney Ryan Villablanca of the LTFRB Regional Office in Eastern Visayas conducted actual inspection of the authority and franchises of various buses, vans, jeepneys and multi–cab units being used in the carriage of passengers to various destinations.

‘The LTFRB is conducting these inspections in several parts of the region pursuant to its mandate to ensure that the riding public are safely transported by public utility operators who are authorized as such with the proper franchise’, said Atty. Villablanca.

Caught in the surprise inspection were several operators violating the provisions and limitations of their authority to operate public utility.

The inspectorate team also discovered some vehicles to be with improper markings, over-aged units, being operated without authority of a franchise or with expired franchise. Some had worn-out tires and considered unfit for travel.

‘The owners of the violating units will be given a ‘show-cause order’ for them to explain their violations while hefty fines and even cancellation of franchise await those who do not comply with the law’, added Atty. Villablanca.

The inspectorate team also proceeded to inspect public utility vehicles in Albuera town and in Ormoc City.

The LTFRB officers said that the inspections and apprehensions is a continued operation under a memorandum order issued by the LTFRB head offices as early as 2014.
