Morning fire guts 'Wonderful Stars' in Ormoc

Another tragedy hits the struggling maritime industry in Ormoc

BREAKING NEWS, ORMOC – Another tragedy hits the struggling maritime industry in Ormoc as one of its bigger ships plying the Ormoc-Cebu sea route called ‘Wonderful Stars’ owned by the Roble group of companies catches fire.

At the time these images were taken, 7.30 Saturday morning, authorities were trying to control the fire as its billowing smoke blackened the Ormoc skyline.

All 544 passengers had disembarked safely, though Sarah Jane Balmaceda of the coast guard office in Ormoc said two of the 59 crew were slightly injured and treated in a hospital.

Coast guard spokesman Armand Balilo said it wasn’t immediately clear what had caused the fire, though the blaze was worsened by fuel from the vehicles on board.

Eight fire trucks from Ormoc and four from the neighbouring towns of Baybay, Kananga, Albuera, and Merida responded to the emergency. However, as of noon on Saturday, the fire had yet to be extinguished.
