ONEVisayas eyes Department of Agriculture support on aid program

CATBALOGAN CITY – Non–profit organization Opportunities for a New Economy in the Visayas (ONEVisayas) is seeking to work with the Department of Agriculture to bolster its anti–poverty package.

The charity organization which is launching its Agriculture Initiative Dispersal (AID) Program intended for at least 14 Leyte municipalities was urged by Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol to meet his Project Management Group so that the program can be fully supported by the department.

‘We can give climate resistant seeds, some water pumps for irrigation, technical support for high–value crops, rice production, and poultry production’, Secretary Piñol said.

‘Government’s efforts to alleviate poverty in the countryside can succeed more with the assistance of pro–active non-government organizations like ONEVisayas’, said Piñol as he spoke with Ms. Nicola Christeen Bevan, ONEVisayas’ Chairman of the Board of Trustees during a multi–sector meeting in Catbalogan City where the region’s lawmakers and top government officials attended.

Ms. Bevan who is presently visiting the Visayas countryside to assess possible anti–poverty intervention strategies in post super typhoon Yolanda areas told the Visayan Business Post that her organization is willing to work with any organization, government or otherwise, for the program.

The agriculture initiative dispersal program seeks to establish a two hectare secluded pilot agriculture site where various high value crops and climate change adaptive based inputs can be grown and later distributed en masse to numerous ideal poverty–stricken recipients.

The aid program is being developed by ONEVisayas’ Project Management Team for Livelihood and Agriculture as a poverty–alleviation project through private sector funding.
